Babel (the movie)
Bad things happen to good people. Sometimes it's because they did something a little bit stupid (although the movie shows you exactly why they got to that place) and sometimes it's due to complete random chance. But this whole movie is suffused with a feeling of dread - that what you're seeing is not going to turn out well. And it bothers you a lot, because with very few scenes, the filmmaker has really given you an understanding of each person and the dreams and sorrows of their life, be it a Moroccan goatherder, a wealthy American tourist, a deaf and troubled Japanese teenager, or an undocumented Mexican nanny. Only 30% of this film is in English, as it jumps all around the world telling its interlocking stories. It was beautifully done, but I found it hard to watch, although slightly redeemed in the end, as some of the stories didn't end as badly as you feared they might.
